Natural Resources
Department Purpose
To protect all lands and resources of Wet’suwet’en territory for the benefit of the Wet’suwet’en, develop capacity for economic development of our communities and to preserve these resources for our children and generations to come.
Department Responsibilities
To establish an information base of Wet’suwet’en territory and provide updates to and seek direction from Hereditary Chiefs. Liaise with appropriate ministries and organizations as needed.
Mandate
The Office of the Wet’suwet’en Natural Resources department is mandated by the hereditary clans to protect, represent and assert title, rights and interests of the hereditary clans with respect to Crown permitting the sale, use and development of natural resources on traditional clan territories.
Our primary role is to receive, review, assess, respond to, all government permit applications, and inform all private sector project proponents of clan requirements for the sale, use and development of clan natural resources.
The Natural Resource department is supported through Communications & Engagement Agreements (CEA), Project Assessment Agreements with private sector project proponents, specific project funding through BC Provincial Government and Canadian Federal and non-government organization grants (NGO’s).
