Department Responsibilities

The Wet’suwet’en have the responsibility and authority to:

  • Protect waters, salmon, wildlife, forests, and ecosystems.
  • Maintain sustainable practices ensuring the land continues to support future generations.
  • Govern access to territories, including monitoring, enforcement, and decision-making about land use.
     

Cultural and Legal Foundations

  • Stewardship and harvesting rights are not just legal rights—they are obligations derived from Wet’suwet’en law, identity, and relationship with the land.
  • The feast system formalizes these responsibilities, ensuring each House group manages its territory for community well-being.
